  • I have the same problems, hard coding the key doesn’t display the key in the form or remove the form. Adding the key through the normal UI reports that it is valid and when refreshed says it is empty.

However, from the code and the ticket @eduardo mentioned, it seems the problem is UI based and that Akismet should still function (Only a guess)with a hard coded key (Can’t say about the key being stored in the database option though).

FYI this is also happening in non-MU installs.

I’m having similar issues. Clicking on the “I already have a key” link does nothing: no windows, tabs, pop-ups or error messages appear.

This occurs under multiple browsers – Chrome, Firefox and Opera. The only extension in use in my version of Opera is Lastpass.

The site is running www.ads-software.com 3.5.1, Akismet 2.5.8.

I am using Mac OS 10.7.5.

I’ve emailed Akismet’s devs about this. I’ll post if I hear anything back.

I haven’t heard back, but I downgraded to Akismet 2.5.7, and I was able to enter my API key and get it working.

    The plugin download link is:
    https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/plugin/akismet.2.5.7.zip.

I received this email from Akismet’s tech support:

“Unfortunately, the plugin is using Javascript to show the API text field. If there is a Javascript error or Javascript is disabled then the field will not show. I haven’t been able to replicate the bug however. I have updated the next version of the plugin to just redirect page instead of using Javascript as there are a lot of users having the same problem as you outlined.

“Would you be able to check your browsers console to see if there are any Javascript errors and send a screenshot of the console please (if you see anything)?”

Please could people who have this error with 2.5.8 do this, and email it to [email protected]? Thanks.

@rcosgrove thank you for posting Akismet’s email!

Trying to obtain an Akismet Key and am being chased in an never ending circle that requires my Word Press ID which then just drives me back to a site to download the Akismet Key which again requires the Word Press ID….etc, ad nauseum. Running latest Akismet and using Chrome. Tried switching to Safari with the same results.

weird.. you can see the input form if you are able to change the display attribute in css.
I could do it with firebug, there is some hide code in html, the only thing to do is change the css attribute display:inline.

So, I think it is a problem with some script supposed to change the style, and it doesn’t work.

Same problem as fosterbraun, Start at dashboard, press Create new akismet key, next screen akismet, press create key, next screen sign in to wordpress.com, I sign in and the next screen is back at the dashboard. An endless loop. It occurs no matter where I go to attempt to obtain key. fosterbraun did you resolve issue, if so how?

My problem solved thanks to the brilliant people at Akismet support. Apperently my wordpress.com needed to authorise the connection to Akismet. They did this for me, I wonder if I should have been able to do it myself.

I have akismet activated on my www.ads-software.com blog… Was working to begin with, but now it is not. Keeps asking for API key, which I do not have. I tried to get a new one, but was redirected to wordpress.COM where I DO NOT have an account. I do not want a wp.com acct because it will mess with my wp.org acct (I know this from experience) I had asked for help before, and was told to do exactly what I had done, which means the reply was no help at all. I know its a wp issue because other plugins are failing as well now. (Shareaholic, Jetpack, etc) I am getting bombarded with spam and want my akismet plugin back up and running!!!

As per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic.

    Where is alternative to Akisme
