The health check of your WordPress site should already report some errors/warnings because of that.

The WebFinger plugin is not needed, it is optional, the ActivityPub plugin comes with all needed features out of the box.

Because the error is thrown by your Webserver and not by WordPress, it seems to be blocked by your hoster, so sadly there is nothing we can do on WordPress level and you might have to contact your hoster.

May I ask where you host?

I just visited your site and all permalinks seem to be broken. Maybe you simply have to re-configure your permalinks setup and ActivityPub might also work!

Yes, I noticed the broken URLs just now, too. It seems that something decided to overwrite my .htaccess.

It might be worth mentioning that I run wordpress in a subfolder, but run the site from root.

Indeed, site health reports that the webfinger endpoint is not available. Very nice to see the plugin integrates with site health.

I’m hosting with DreamHost. They indeed do not appear to provide webfinger functionality.

I found the following URL, which explains how it’s possible to setup webfinger yourself:

But you’re saying that’s not what that plugin does?

The same URL also lists a webfinger PHP package.

Normally you do not have to do something by hand. The plugin generates everything needed out of the box.

Odd. I didn’t change anything, and neither did my host. So how could this suddenly be returning a different result.
