It’s likely that the WP update did not go well.

    Try a manual update: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update

WOW that is technical for me. Is there any way to easily roll back ?

    Hi Charlotte

I just had exactly the same problem with an error on line 1117! For me though it wasn’t the update of wordpress that broke it, it was the update of a plugin called W3 Total Cache.

Are you running that plugin do you know?

I couldn’t disable it via the wordpress admin as I just had a blank page, so I ftp’d in to the server and deleted it from the plugins folder. Not sure if that was the right thing to do but it worked for me and I can now get back into the admin area.

YES I think I am running that plug in ! I really need to take a wordpress class. I don’t want to code sites but I would like to understand things better. Any recommendations ?

I am hosted on Hostgator. Can you give me dummy instructions on how to delete the plugin ? Thankfully, I backed up my site to dropbox before attempting an update.

Via FTP or your host’s control panel file manager, rename wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache (or something like that) to something else (e.g., put a .old on the directory name). That will disable the plugin and may allow you to login.

I’m not that familiar with hostgator but they have a support page here about how to FTP to your hosting. You’ll need to download a free program, enter your website details and then you’ll see all the files. Their support people should be able to help you.

here’s the link to their ftp support

    https://support.hostgator.com/articles/ftp-getting-started

If that still seems a bit complicated you could always send their support team a ticket and ask if they will delete the plugin for you. Just ask them to delete the folder called “w3-total-cache” that is in the “wp-content/plugins” directory.

Once thats done you should be up and running again.

thanks steve – I will try that ??

Thank you ALL. It seems to be working. Hostgator support said the wp update failed to update the databases but we also disabled the W3 total cache plug in. If the plug in is the issue would we expect it to be fixed ? Should I choose a different cache plug in.

I’ve stopped using W3TC and use a combination of autoptimize and WP Super Cache.
