I am unable to insert GIFs into posts. These GIFs are functional in all other situations (social media, GIF hosting sites, viewed in a browser, etc.).

When using the ‘Add Media’ button to upload the GIFs, I receive an ‘HTTP error.’ However, I was able to upload GIFs to the Media Library by using a combination of FileZilla and the ‘Add From Server’ plugin by Dion Hulse. The GIF appears as a generic placeholder image in the Media Library. The attachment details list the file size, but do not show the dimensions of the GIF.

When added to a post, it does not display in either the edit page or the preview of the page. It is as if it has not been added at all. This is true of all GIFs I have tried from various sources. I’m not sure if it is relevant, but my site is hosted by HostGator.

I’m in the process of creating a new series of posts for my site which rely heavily on my own GIFs and am at a loss of how to proceed. Please help.

Is there anything else besides the HTTP error? Does it say anything else?

Are you able to look at your error_logs? If you don’t know where those are, reach out to your hosting company and they will know where those reside.

Thank you for your response. There is only the HTTP error message within the media library when I attempt to add the GIF to it. I have discussed this with HostGator and we have not determined what is causing this problem, yet. Some GIFs work, but far too many do not.

    Interesting… ??

Have you looked at your error logs? If you don’t know where those reside you can reach out to your host about it.

Th problem has been found. HostGator updated the PHP because the previous version could not properly do all types of GIFs. All GIFs work now with the updated version.
