I am unable to install themes or plugins on my wordpress blog. Each time I try to install themes or plugins, I keep getting page not found 404. I am able to login to my web using FTP though. Help, can’t find any help on the net. I have even tried to deactivate all the plugins, but did not resolve.

Hey, I think it has started working. I just tried it again. Not sure what fixed it, but it is working now. Thanks.

Hmm, I am getting a similar problem.

I can upload some new themes through wp-admin but not the one I am interested in. I get this message.

The uploaded file could not be moved to /var/www/mdt/wp-content/uploads/2010/05.

I have previously downloaded the theme successfully to a WAMP installing using wp-admin.

I’ve removed all the old plugins & widgets on the (new) host and deactivatd all plugins and widgets on my side and tried zipping and uploading again. Same message.

Any ideas? (I don’t have access to FTP without getting tech out over the weekend.)

The WordPress uploader is for media files, not themes and plugins. If the theme is not available in the theme catalogue, you’ll have to install it manually by uploading it with an FTP client.

Thanks for the link macmanx, but are you entirely correct?

As I described in my original comment, some themes upload this way; some not.

I am aware that/uploads is the wrong sub-folder. That is the question. Why is WP bouncing off wp-content/themes to wp-content/uploads?

Yep, I’ve been doing this for well over 5 years. If you use WordPress’ media uploader, it’s going to /wp-content/uploads/, which is the wrong directory for theme files. You’ll need to upload it manually.

    @macmanx

Thought I was using theme uploader. Is it the same module in the background?

If theme uploader doesn’t work and hasn’t worked for 5 years, we should get a clear indication ‘on the tin’.

Oh, the theme uploader! I don’t know why I was being so daft, thought you meant the media uploader for some reason.

I just ran a test with iDream and Mystique on my blog. Both downloaded and activated successfully both via the catalogue and the theme uploader.

Try changing the permissions on the /wp-content/themes/ directory to 777.

    That’s exactly my problem!

Some themes work perfectly. The one I want doesn’t.

Yet when I downloaded it onto a Wamp installation, it did.

The IT people behind the host have doubledchecked the permissions and as I have successfully downloaded other themes since, I know they are OK.

What is holding up this theme? I stripped out plugins and widgets. I checked the host has the latest WP.

    What else could it be?

    Dear all,

For everyone who has faced the problem:
Unable to install new plugins or themes or upgrade to the latest version of word press.

    I faced similar problem.

I was not able to install new theme, or upgrade to the latest version. I thought this was linked to me using an older WP version. When I clicked on upgrade to the latest wordpress version, it stopped at: ‘Unpacking the update’.

    The problem was:
    The file wp-admin/includes/files.php
Modifies the php variable ‘memory_limit’ to 256Mb. This means, you should have 256Mb space available on your web hosting – slightly unrealistic for small space hosting users.

I commented out this piece of code in this PHP file and everything was running back smoothly.

I hope this helps out people!

    Cheers.
