Unable to locate WordPress Content directory (wp-content). WP 3.0.1

  • Hi all,

    I have been fighting with the same thing for days now and it’s time to ask for help ??

    I installed WordPress 3.0.1 for a friend on a domain hosted by domain.com. Their setup is domain/webspace/httpdocs/

    Installation went fine but I run into the same problem as many other when I want to install new themes/plugins through the WP interface:
    Unable to locate WordPress Content directory (wp-content).

    I tried every suggestion from this topic (and more):

    Adding the lines to the config file indeed bypasses having to fill out the FTP details, but then gets stuck on downloading the zip.

    The Third Party Host Fix plugin returns this error upon activation:
    The plugin generated 1 characters of unexpected output during activation. If you notice “headers already sent” messages, problems with syndication feeds or other issues, try deactivating or removing this plugin.

    Adding another FTP account with direct access to the WP folder doesn’t solve anything.

    I am out of ideas. Has any of you been able to solve this problem with something I have not tried. Or do I miss something maybe, am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions are more than welcome as I want this WP installation to be fully functional from the dashboard so my friend does not need me for any uploads.

    Did you manually upload and install wordpress into the domain, or did you use domain.com’s wordpress installer?

    I’m running a wordpress site that’s hosted on domain.com, and I remember having problems using their built-in installer. I ended up uploading it manually via FTP, and did not encounter any more problems since.

    I tried the domain.com’s wordpress installer at first but was not happy as well so I did a manual install. Different problems, but still problems ??

    When did you install WP on domain.com? Maybe you did something different than me… Basically I adjusted the config file and uploaded the whole WP folder to htppdocs

    Hi Noortja,

    This is probably too late but there was a bug in the plugin which had a leading space in the php file which broke RSS feeds. I’ve updated the plugin to address this, so perhaps give it another try (also info for those with similar issues)

    I too have the same error stating it can’t find the wp-content directory when either trying to automatically update a plugin or install a new theme using my WordPress Dashboard.

    I uploaded all the Wordpresd filed manually using an FTP program, all file uploaded fine with no errors.

    Upon opening my site, I was prompted to enter the database details, and that worked fine as well.

    I’m using the free hosting service from Byethost. As this is my very first attempt at creating a wordpress self-hosted site (I used wordpress free blogs for a while), I’m considering myself a newbie when it comes to all things wordpress ??

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi moraelyn,

    You can try installing the “Third Party Host Fix” plugin using an FTP program, into the wordpress’ plugins directory, and then activating it using the wordpress dashboard.

    Once you got the plugin activated, it should allow you to install other plugins and new themes.
