    Hello,

    I did go through some of the similar topics here, but my site has none of the problems. WordPress uses its own database, there is only one wordpress in this hosting and only one domain as well (for me).

    My site liriel.org has been inactive for a very long time and I am trying to revive it and start using it again. Of course I had lost all memory of all passwords and it has automatically updated itself to version 3.8.4, if I can believe my e-mails, but after that I have received e-mail to update to 4.01, but it seems that couldn’t be done automatically. I will of course update it as soon as I get access again…

    I resetted the admin password to a new one first through phpMyAdmin (I’m pretty comfortable with it), then did the emergency.php option (which sent e-mail with confirmation as well).

    The behavior is still the same, regardless of what I do. When I go to liriel.org/wp_login.php, a browser popup pops up to ask for username and password. I insert the username and newly set password, I even copy-pasted it just in case, and submit. The popup disappears for a moment, then comes back up as if nothing happened.

    Please advise how to continue.

    The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • The pop-up has nothing to do with WordPress. It’s something your hosting installed. Contact your hosting if you don’t know your login.

    Why should they install something there? The main site has no such login window and it is in the same directory. The directory is completely under my own control, and I only get this popup if I try and access wp-login.php or /wp-admin/ directory. I tried my web hosting username and password there, they didn’t work as well. I also checked from my web hosting GUI and there are no password-protected directories or anything to this effect that I could detect from there.

    I will contact them to ask, but I am sceptical that it could be the reason, so any other suggestions are welcome.

    Please paste your site’s .htaccess file.

    @oliriel,
    sorry to butt in, but this post on Radicenter’s website says

    In the last few weeks there has been frequent attacks against Joomla and WordPress Content Management Software
    pages. The target has been administrator panel to break the username and password). We have taken precaution measures to increase security and added a login filter, which prevents “robots” to try login administration panel.

    Therefore, the user is asked before the administration login page additional username and password.

    Follow the instructions on that page to log in

    @alichani, you are right, that’s it! I would have never guessed there could be something like this! Thank you so much! Oh I wish they had sent an e-mail to all their WordPress and Joomla customers, it would have been so easy to do, but I guess it would be too much to ask…

    @sterndata, no .htaccess for my site, but luckily @alichani was able to point me to the correct site.
