My website was updated to WordPress 6.2 around 6:58AM UK time today. I could not log into the WordPress Dashboard as normal.

I tried changing my password, even though I use a password manager. The message received is as follows:

ERROR: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi,

This sounds like a Wordfence issue. Can you deactivate your Wordfence plugin by FTP or SQL or by contacting your webhost and asking the favor? Then I’d assume you’d be able to log in. Clear site and server caches, then attempt to re-activate Wordfence.

Also, please refer to several other WP support forum posts here with the same “An error was encountered while trying to authenticate” error, such as this one: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/error-an-error-was-encountered-while-trying-to-authenticate-moved-web-host/

    Thanks Little Package,

I have got a request for help out to my webhost, so I will pass on your thoughts to them.

Great. If your website wasn’t using Wordfence, let us know here. Also, if you DID have Wordfence, focus on the troubleshooting instructions in that link I sent you previously.
