Unable to login to slack channel

  • I have recieved an email with an invitation to the slack channel.

    However, I am unable to use my normal slack login to enter. Also I haven’t a user by the name of [ email deleted ] and I don’t need another account, when I have a working slack account already.

    My working account is [ email also deleted, don’t post those OK? ] and I would like to join the wordpress slack channel with that specific account – how do I do that?

    If you have a working Slack account for WordPress.slack.com (that’s important) then you can use that. If it’s not for that specific tenant of Slack then you need another Slack account.

    You can’t use accounts from one Slack instance in another. You got the invite email, complete the new account setup using that.

    Sorry, you can only join WordPress slack using your [email protected] address (this email redirects to your profile set email, but only for WordPress slack)

    You must use the chat.www.ads-software.com site, and login with the chat.www.ads-software.com email the first time. You can change your email on slack after login, but direct invites do not work.

    You cannot use your normal email address to enter. When you are first invited, you must login using the chat.www.ads-software.com email address that it gave you. You can change the email on Slack to your real one, if you like, after you login the first time. But that first time must be using the @ chat address.

    That @ chat email address will only work for emails from Slack (so it cannot be used to spam you), and it will forward messages to whatever email account you have listed here on www.ads-software.com (meaning that you don’t have to give Slack your real email if you do not want to do so).

    Exception: The chat email address will also work for Gravatar, if you want to claim it and assign it a profile picture on that service.

    The thing is, Slack accounts are not universal in the first place. There is no such thing as “one account” for Slack. Each instance is separate from all the rest. So even if you use the same email address on multiple Slacks, it’s not a shared account between them, each one is separate and individual to that unique Slack. The chat address allows some privacy conscious folks to maintain a layer of separation while continuing to be able to contribute. You can switch it to be more direct if you like (they didn’t used to have that), but if not, it will work just fine with the pretend chat email address instead.

    In other words, it’s private by default. We won’t give anybody, including Slack, your email address.
