• Hi —
I’m working on driftlessprairies.org I am trying to revamp a page and noticed that my link/unlink icons are gray and not working. I am working with 3.6 WordPress version; I have everything updated; I have deactivated plugins; and I have changed to Twenty-Eleven with no changes in the link/unlink icons. I have searched the forums and see a couple of unresolved issues regarding this, but nothing with answers so started a new one. This is occurring on the pages and on the posts although not on all of these! I can’t figure out a pattern. None of the parent pages allow for links and some of the individuals pages and posts do while others do not. While there are links that are created are working on pages/posts, I am unable to add more. Suggestions, please? I’m grateful for you help!

I have everything updated; I have deactivated plugins; and I have changed to Twenty-Eleven with no changes in the link/unlink icons.

    Have you also tried:

    – To rule out any theme-specific issue, try switching to the unedited default theme (Twenty Twelve) for a moment using the WP dashboard. If you don’t have access to your admin area, you can switch to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides. Alternately, you can remove other themes except the default theme. That will force your site to use it.
resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems (because the hooks remain unless plugins completely removed or some plugins stick around in cached files. So by renaming the folder, you break them and force them inactive). Read “How to deactivate all plugins when you can’t log in to wp-admin” if you need help.
    – If the above troubleshooting steps fail to resolve the issue, try manually re-uploading all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first!

I have access to the wp-admin. I switched to Twenty-Twelve (whoops — thought Twenty Eleven was the right one). I went to my host and renamed the plugins folder, then renamed it back (was I supposed to do that?) and nothing has changed.

have you discussed the issue with your hosting provider?

No, I haven’t. I assume you’re telling me it’s something they need to work out. I’ll get with them next then. Thanks.

I checked with my host. It’s not a issue with them. They say there is a bug with WordPress and the fix is installing TinyMC plug in. See this dialogue. https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/tinymce-links-not-working-in-editor-after-35-upgrade?replies=8

This may be the answer, but I don’t know how to access the plug in to do what is instructed. And there’s a 3.5.8 version now. Suggestions?

The thread you refrenced pertains to WP 3.5, But you said in your orginal post that you are working 3.6!!

Uh-oh — you are right! I am working in 3.6! So what do I do now to “fix” this issue?

have you tried any of the basic troubleshooting steps I suggested I before?

I haven’t done the manual re-uploading. I forgot about that. I guess I was hoping to NOT have to do that. I have no confidence that I’ll be able to do it correctly. I’ll work on it tomorrow when I’m fresher.

I’m not sure what fixed it. I struggled with the manual update because uploading a folder (wp-contents) isn’t the same as uploading a file within that so I went to my host and they helped me and all is working fine now. Thanks for your help!!

Geez — I make this “resolved” way before I should. Deleting those files and restoring via the backup has now made 2 menus and their 100s of pages not show up on the site. Any thoughts?
