Hi All,

I currently have a problem whereby I am unable to preview or update existing pages that I have modified. When I try to preview the page or save it I get a 404 page can’t be found error. I have tried disabling all the plugins, changing to a default theme, re-saving the permalinks to update the .htaccess file , and reinstalling the latest version of WordPress. If I duplicate a page I get the same result as with the original page.

I can create new pages, publish and preview them successfully.

    Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    James

Check and, if necessary, repair your database. There may be something funky there.

    Hi Steve,

i tried that and unfortunately it made no difference. I still get a page not found page displayed with the website header and footer.

    Thanks

How are you hosting your site?

    Hi Steve,

It is hosted via a hosting company.

    Thanks

I found something odd when I did an xml export of the pages of the website. I found the following text:

    "

admin

The https://xyz.zxy/GSMC is an old website address not the website name of the current website. Could that be causing the issue?

If so – If I modify the whole xml file and replace the old address for the correct one and reimport could that resolve the issue?

    Thanks

It’s worth a shot. Use the plugin “better search replace” to fix that.

I did a replace using “better search replace” and unfortunately it hasn’t made any difference to the issue. I checked one of the pages that had the information modified and then tried to preview it – with the same result – came back saying page not found.

    Thanks

I have just discovered that if I change the permalink to ‘plain’ and try and to preview a page I get the following error – instead of the ‘page not found’ error:

    Forbidden
You don’t have permission to access /wp-admin/post.php on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    Thanks

That may indicate you have an .htaccess problem or your host is using mod_secure and it’s breaking your site.

    Hi Steve,

    Sorry for the late reply.
I came in this morning to do some checking on the website and I am now able to preview and change pages again.
I think our hosting company has changed something at their end as our website was down for 2 1/2 hrs overnight with a connection time out.

Many thanks for your help with trying to resolve the issue.

    Best wishes

    James
