I don’t know what triggered this, if there was an update recently or something happened on the server: or perhaps this site is hacked? The client contacted me because their most recent scan had found possible malware, but when I logged into dashboard I saw an error message from Wordfence saying “The Wordfence Web Application Firewall cannot run. . . configuration files are corrupt or inaccessible by the web server . . . try to rebuild by clicking here. . . ” I followed that link and tried to “Enable Firewall” but got an error saying “An error occurred while saving the configuration.” I’ve also tried configuring through the tab for Firewall Options. But nothing in that section works. I never even get popup dialog boxes.

What can I do to troubleshoot this problem?

    Thanks for any help.

  • Hi Lisa,

It could be a file permission issue related to “wflogs” directory, in (Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics) what did you get at “Filesystem” and “Wordfence Config” sections?

Also, try to delete “wflogs” directory by connecting to your site via SFTP, then refresh any of the plugin’s options pages, after that you will notice this directory is regenerated, make sure to switch the firewall status to “Enabled and Protecting” then.

Let me know how it goes,
    Thanks.
