I previously installed the plugin, and it worked like a charm.

I subsequently accidentally deleted a related database element and received a core WordPress notice of a critical failure, although the site continued to work fine.

To prevent future problems, though, I thought it best to deactivate, delete, and reinstall the plugin anew.

Now, when I try to activate the newly installed plugin, my site crashes with a critical error message, and the only way to remedy the situation is to rename or delete the plugin file via SFTP.

What extra elements beyond simply deleting the plugin file itself – database options or tables or other file entries or modifications – do I need to scrub so that I can reinstall the plugin cleanly without breaking my site?

    Thanks,

  • Hi @saintandrews,

Thanks for reaching out. The critical errors can be logged in a file. Can you please enable debug log and share the errors here? The best way to completely delete the plugin with all of its data is by checking Uninstall WP Mail SMTP option in WP Mail SMTP > Settings > Misc and then deleting the plugin.

    Thanks, Sanjeev.

I’ve got the plugin pretty much wiped from every option table I could find it in, and, because the recent WordPress core critical protection function automatically blocks me from activating it in order to activate its uninstall option, I believe at this point I’ll just leave well enough alone since I’ve since found an alternative that doesn’t present those problems.

Since I can delete plugins from their folder directly anyway, one might think the WordPress core developers would leave the option to take the risk of activating the plugin if the user wanted to rather than simply paralyzing any use of it.
