When I go Appearance->Widgets and make any changes and click the Update button, it changes to “saving…” but never finishes.

I’m using the Twenty Twenty theme.

I’ve tried removing all the widgets and re-adding them.

I’ve updated all plugins to the latest available versions.

The only thing I haven’t tried is upgrading PHP7.3 to 7.4 on my host, which I haven’t tried yet since my Debian Buster release is all up-to-date, and that includes sticking to PHP7.3.

    What can I do?

This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and switch to the default Twenty Twenty-One theme. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of the problem.

If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

Thanks @macmanx don’t know how I managed to get this far in life without that plugin. It’s like having superpowers now. I fixed my immediate problem and updated my widgets, but now I’m not sure what happens next.

It turns out it was the Gutenberg plugin causing the problem. It totally changes the Widgets edit dialog layout and behaviour, and unsurprisingly it says it hasn’t been tested with 5.6 ??

Gutenberg has been built-into WordPress for quite some time now, the Gutenberg plugin itself is just used as a testing ground for upcoming features now, thus it may be unstable from time to time.

If you have no need for testing those upcoming features, it’s safe to remove that plugin.

    Sorted.
