    I went through all options and all worked well except when I went into maintenance mode, made a new post but was prevented from getting past maintenance page. I put IP address in whitelist – both the full and truncated one – but still no access when in maintenance. Just to be clear, I was able to log-in on maintenance page, but was unable to reload a draft post to view. Am I missing something? Attempting this on a multi-site, options set to primary page and subsites, tried with front end access both on and off.Thanks.

    That looks correct. arcticexplorer.ca is the Primary site with site ID of 1. The avcr subdomain subsite is site ID 2.

    Hmm yeah I am out of ideas and am not really sure what is going on with your site. I guess you should throw in the towel now and install another Maintenance Mode plugin on your site and see if it works on your site.

    You’ve been very helpful. Will do as you suggest and continue to exp[lore other features of BPS. Problem will reveal itself in due course and I will update this space.

    Yep I am curious about how the things that are occurring on your site are occurring so if you figure it out then definitely let me know what that is.

    This thread has been resolved, but we still receive email notifications when a new post is created in a thread that has been resolved. So if/when you do figure out what is going on with this site please post that info. thanks.

    Thread Start Date: 11-29-2014 to 11-30-2014
    Thread Resolved/Current Date: 12-6-2014
    Comments: This is some kind of isolated issue/problem with this particular website and not an issue/problem with the BPS plugin itself.

    Greetings,
    I am having the same issue with my multisite/network (set up a week ago). I have so far only set up the primary site and network and could not use the BPS MMode options due to this problem.

    Before I go into all the gory details, I’m wondering if I and maybe the OP mistakenly installed BPS from the dashboard of the primary site, instead of from the Network Admin UI and that is what causes the problem? (pretty sure I didn’t, but could be). As with articexplorer, my BPS settings options are showing on the Primary Site (ID 1) configuration menu, but not the Network’s menu.

    My wp-config settings are:

    /* Multisite */
    define( ‘WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE’, true );
    define(‘MULTISITE’, true);
    define(‘SUBDOMAIN_INSTALL’, true);
    define(‘DOMAIN_CURRENT_SITE’, ‘my-primary.net’);
    define(‘PATH_CURRENT_SITE’, ‘/’);
    define(‘SITE_ID_CURRENT_SITE’, 1);
    define(‘BLOG_ID_CURRENT_SITE’, 1);

    And, I double-checked my ip addresses for the whitelist.

    I wonder if arcticexplorer could chime in again with results of trying a fresh install – would be much appreciated.

    I’m not sure if this is relevant, but I initially installed wp-maintenance-mode, then uninstalled when I discovered BPS would take care of it for me. Also, if relevant, I’m using the vantage theme.

    It’s probably not a big deal to uninstall and try again, ensuring I’m in the Network Admin but would like to hear if others might have solved the issue another way.

    hmm you brought up a good point. I believe we have only tested Maintenance Mode using the most logical choice – activate BPS sitewide, so that all subsites can be tested.

    BPS Pro works fine in these Subdomain test site types, but we are not doing anything with DNS so that may be a factor. We cannot test doing anything with DNS since these are Local Server XAMPP testing sites.

    Network Subdomain testing site types:
    Standard Network Subdomain site installed in the root folder
    GWIOD Network Subdomain site installed in a subdirectory folder

    DNS – none used / Local XAMPP server

    BPS Installation/Activation:
    Network Admin panel installation. Activated sitewide.

    Pending further testing with other activation methods.

    Other possible factors could be server specific issues such as:
    Server Type:
    Operating System:
    WP Filesystem API Method:
    Server API:

    …or php configuration settings such as open_basedir is being used
    …or file permissions or Ownership is not allowing file writing throughout all website directories.

    Checking the server’s php error log file and the servers main log file would probably show errors indicating where the problem is occurring.

    (@aitpro)

    All available Network/Multisite plugin activation methods have been tested and Maintenance Mode functions/works normally.

    Conclusion: This is probably a server specific issue/problem that is caused by one or more of the factors stated in the previous forum reply or the Network site or DNS is not setup correctly. Checking the server’s php error log file and the servers main log file would probably show errors indicating where the problem is occurring on a Network website/server where Maintenance Mode is not working normally.

    There are no errors showing in my server logs.

    Server Type: Apache
    Operating System: Linux
    WP Filesystem API Method: direct
    Server API: cgi-fcgi CGI Host Server Type

    I deleted the plugin files and folders via cpanel (having locked myself out of the backend via BPS Mmode). Deactivated all other plugins, ensured I was in the Network Admin panel, and did a fresh install. Went through all the other settings before getting to MMode. My earlier template and settings were still there, so I assume there were dbase entries leftover.

    It is odd that the BPS options panel is not available in the Network Admin area (but is in primary site).

    Throughout, the “Reminder: Frontend Maintenance is turned on” was at the top of the admin pages. When fiddling with Mmode options, I was getting conflicting and double messages/reminders, eg: top of page Blue reminders: “Frontend Maintenance is turned on”, AND “Frontend Maint is turned on for primary and subsites”, and then under the tab heading, green “Frontend Maintenance turned off”…And the same problems as in the earlier install. I don’t know what ‘got fixed’, but I tried every possible combination of ‘save options’, turn on, turn off until, voila, it is now working as it should, and there is only one blue message: Reminder: Frontend Maintenance Mode is Turned On. ?? ?? !!

    Not sure if I’ve made any sense there — I’d started this post and ended up booted out because I didn’t save/send soon enough.

    Sorry I couldn’t be more help, this took a lot of time, but I really wanted the functionality of BPS and being able to minimize number of plugins…

    Really appreciate your work,
    Thanks!

    I know exactly the scenario you are describing. Since I had not used MMode on a Network site for a long time and then while doing testing I ran into this same confusing scenario. At first I thought MMode was completely broken until I remembered that the MMode code is very complex and in some cases turning things on or off does not necessarily mean something is really being turned on or off depending on if something else is on or off. We need to figure out how to make the “special” Network options simpler, better, easier to understand and use.

    I think the solution is to have a very detailed status displayed at all times. Something like X is on so X is overriding Y. In order for Y to be on/off you need to turn off X first.

    Just a little additional info. The versatility of MMode is excellent since you can create new templates on the fly in any situation without actually changing anything on the frontend of the site, but without some kind of static display of what is going on then it is very easy to get confused. This will get figured out in the next BPS version release.

    I agree – it is excellent, and was worth the perseverance to get it up and working for my new network :).

    One more quick thing – I know I can probably dig for an answer, but hope this will be quicker. If your IP is changing (as mine had from one day to the next), how do you ensure you don’t get locked out if you have backend activated?

    (@aitpro)

    Most ISP’s will only change the last one or two octets of your IP address, but I have seen some ISP’s changing the last 3 octets and even the entire IP address.

    An IPv4 IP address has 4 octets: 1.2.3.4
    So if your host is only changing the last/4th octet then you would use 3 octets of your ip address: 1.2.3.
    If your host is changing the last 2 octets 3rd and 4th then you would use 2 octets of your ip address 1.2.
    If your host is changing the last 3 octets 2nd, 3rd and 4th then you would use 1 octet of your ip address 1.

    Let’s say your ip address is 100.99.88.77 and your host regularly changes the last 2 octets of your ip address. You would use/enter ip address: 100.99.
    So if your ISP changed your ip address to 100.99.44.1 or 100.99.55.2 then both of these ip addresses would still be whitelisted/allowed to view the site normally.

    Answered this on my company Blackberry this afternoon but doesn’t seem to have gone through. I didn’t do a re-install – not yet – but I did install on a single site and did not work there either. Have gone to a simpler MM plugin until I figure this out. Still not sure if it’s me or something else.
