Unable to style Paragraph Tags in WordPress

    For some odd reason I can’t edit styles for Paragraph Tags using WordPress 4.1, any idea why? for example:

    <p class=”test”><?php the_excerpt(); ?></p>

    Style.css
    ===========
    p.test{color:red;}
