• I upgraded to 4.2 without any issues. But then I went to try and update my plugs that said they needed updating (JetPack and Contact form). I picked the ones to update, got taken to the ftp info page (which looked very weird), I entered the info and then I get taken to the next page like normal, but all that shows is:

    “The update process is starting. This process may take a while on some hosts, so please be patient.

    Enabling Maintenance mode…”

    It never progresses beyond there and the plugins won’t update. Any ideas?

    (For what it’s worth, I was able to update the themes.)

  • I have had issues with the AJAX updating feature but I found that the issue was a plugin that implanted a custom version of the AJAX updater (before core had the feature) and the code was never removed from the plugin.

    You will see the error in the console. You can get more information at https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors on how to use your browser to debug.

    When I try to install Plugin I get the following message. Did a recent update to 4.2.1 with Theme TwentyFifteen

    Could not create directory. /var/www/vhosts/thermalimages.ca/greatlakessmokers.ca_httpdocs/wp-content/plugins/backup-wp/

    I am a new to TwentyFifteen, having problems
    Any help would be appreciated

    @pyromania666 – deactivate, update, activate – it works! Thank you, so simple but i was looking for this particular problem two days ??

    @mrecker
    Your server file permissions are not setup correctly. You can have a look at this lovely article about what WordPress recommends directory and file permissions to be: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_File_Permissions

    Problem solved
    Some how the plugin directory in wp-content disappeared
    Recreated with FTP, now it works

    WordPress released 4.2.2 and the problem still exist. I still cant upgrade plugins.

    @rypher21:
    Don’t tell me
    wp-admin/includes/file.php
    in 4.2.2 is broken again?

    Have same problem.All websites on one hosting. Never had this problem before, never on same hosting.
    Upgrade to 4.2.2 made timeout. I removed maintenance file and updated manually. But you cannot expect to disable all plugins on live sites, and then update plugins ?

    And update wont work when plugin is deactivated. Just testing, spinner spins for 15 minutes and nothing happens.

    Difference between your proposed fix and 4.2.2 file.php is:

    – === $filename
    – == $filename (only two ==)

    Dont know if this have some importance.

    Tested on 5.2, 5.4 and 5.6 PHP server versions, same problem.

    Now update suddenly works by itself, faster than ever before.
    Can it be that WP servers are over loaded and have nasty peaks and they make timeouts.

    Or my hosting provider changed something to fix this mess.

    It is pretty hard to overload the WP servers but it but it is always possible. It is more likely host was overloaded due to all the WP sites updating. It is common on over populated shared hosting.

    Why it is so hard ?
    Last two years Microsoft update servers take half hour for just 2 small updates.

    Everything has its limits.

    THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I finally found this post after an hour of trying to get the auto-update to process and it ‘stopping’ at the same place as everyone else mentioned previously… The server my client is on is a shared server and it would have been more hassle than I wanted to deal with to perform the manual upgrade. The line 149 edit saved me.

    I just keep getting this message:
    “An error occurred while updating Jetpack by WordPress.com: Could not remove the old plugin.”
    I tried the deactivating everything and just updating one at a time, but I still couldn’t get it to update. I also can not download any new plugins… I don’t understand the changing line 149 fix so I can’t try that one. Is there something else I can do to fix this and/or can someone explain to me how to do the line 149 fix? Thanks!

    So with this 4.2.2 I had a lot of different experiences from server to server for each site I updated.
    But on the one that gave me the problem last update where I used the file.php fix, I had the most problems this time.
    I re-uploaded the edited file.php, but the core update just hung and spun half way through. So I closed the window in the browser and went back in where I had the message to update the database (did that) and then got another message that the site had been updated.
    Weird.
    I could not get plugin to update … until i deactivated – updated – reactivated.
    Glad it was only on this one site.
