Unable to update posts or pages.

  • I have no idea of the reason, but I am finding it impossible to update posts and pages in WordPress at the moment. I can access the dashboard and edit posts just fine, but when I hit the Update button it doesn’t work at all – no error message or anything, it just takes forever to load the next page. It’s like this in both Opera and Firefox.

    What’s confusing is that a friend has been able to edit and update pages on the same installantion of WP with no issues at all, so I really can’t figure it out, aside from guessing that it must be something I’m doing wrong at my end of things.

    I’ve tried resetting my internet connection, logging out of WP and logging in again, rebooting my machine, clearing the cache, making sure my browser is up-to-date. No joy – I’ve got several sites that run on WordPress, and am experiencing the same issue on all of them. I’m really at my wit’s end here, so any suggestions as to what might be causing this would be gladly received.

  • Try disabling all your plugins.

    If that works, then reactivate them one by one until you find the one that causes the problem.

    Nope, no joy. Even with all plugins disabled I still get the infinite load-time when I try to update posts and pages.

    Try clearing out your history and cache.

    Cache and history have been cleared to no effect. I’m not convinced that’d be a likely cause if it, given that I’m equally unable to update in Firefox, Opera and Chrome. I’ve also flushed my DNS cache and restarted my internet connection several times.

    I’ve done a bit more poking around.

    I can edit posts/pages from the Quick Edit options, but trying to update things from the actual edit screen hits the infinite-load issue. It’s just totally failing to submit the data at all.

    I’ve tried turning off my firewall (briefly), I’ve set WordPress to default theme and no plugins at all, still not working. I’m guessing it might be something to do with my machine itself, but have no idea what settings to reset or purge or adjust to get things working again.

    Have you tried a different browser?

    Might also be worth investigating whether mod_security is tripping you up. Try adding the following two lines to the top of your .htaccess file:

    SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off

    Otherwise, speak to your host to see if they can shed any light on what’s happening from their pov.
