    Hi all,

I’ve been seeing the following message in my dashboard since 7th January and it has me concerned.

The last rules update for the Wordfence Web Application Firewall was unsuccessful. The last successful update check was 07/01/2021 9.46 pm, so this site may be missing new rules added since then. You may wait for the next automatic attempt at 04/02/2021 9.51 pm or try to Manually Update by clicking the “Manually Refresh Rules” button below the Rules list

When I try to manually refresh I get the following message.

No rules were updated. Please verify your website can reach the Wordfence servers.

I’ve tried reactivating Wordfence, but the problem persists.

    Can anyone help?

Does anyone here know or can point me to where I can find out why this is happening and how I can fix it?

Hi @niallasd, sorry to see you’re having trouble updating the rules and thanks for reaching out to us for help.

Aside from making sure WordPress directories have the recommended 755 permission, make sure you have the latest updates to Wordfence and WordPress, then try deleting the rules.php file in wp-content/wflogs. Wordfence will automatically regenerate the file (usually within 30 minutes.)

If you have persistent problems with this file/folder, you can bypass this entirely by setting Wordfence to write to the MySQLi storage engine instead of a file if you prefer: https://www.wordfence.com/help/firewall/mysqli-storage-engine/

Let me know how that goes for you. If you’re unable to find a resolution above, can you send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

Note: For the fastest response time, please make sure and add any information or questions directly to this topic and not the email address above unless asked.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

Thanks for your reply Peter, just before seeing it I had been in touch with my host to see if they could help. The problem was that outgoing connections were blocked, they whitelisted them and I no longer have this issue.

    Hi @niallasd,

That would hopefully have shown in the diagnostic, but really pleased to hear you were able to resolve it in the mean time.

Thanks for your query and feel free to reach out with a new topic any time should you have any further Wordfence questions.

    Peter.

    Hi Peter,

The error has shown up again and deleting rules.php didn’t fix it, I have sent diagnostic report as suggested.

If my hosting provider is blocking one of your servers where scan signatures and firewall rules come from can you please give me the details so I can relay it to them and fix this?

Am I at risk because of this?

    Hi @niallasd,

I have an email link to topics I’ve been a part of and have just spotted your additional reply to this today. Due to our focus on active topics, ones previously marked as resolved may not always come back to our attention.

I will leave a link to our IP addresses here should they need to be allowed by your host: https://www.wordfence.com/help/advanced/#servers-and-ip-range

However, if this persists or you need further assistance, please start a new topic and explain steps you have already taken with your host.

    Thanks,

    Peter.
