Whenever I attempt to upload any type of media i get this message:
An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now.

What does this mean and how do I correct it so that I can update to version 4.1?

  • See if the Background Update Tester plugin can help you diagnose the issue.

From the Background Update Tester page :

Most sites are able to apply updates in the background. Background Update Tester checks your site for compatibility and explains any problems.

You may update WordPress manually. Below are the steps-

    1. Download the latest WordpPress zip file and unzip that file.
    2. Deactivate plugins.
    3. Delete the old wp-includes and wp-admin folder and upload the new wp-includes and wp-admin folders.
    4. Do NOT delete your existing wp-content folder just Upload the individual files from the new wp-content folder to your existing wp-content folder, overwriting existing files.
    5. Upload all new loose files from the root directory of the new version to your existing wordpress root directory.
    6. Don’t do any changes in wp-config.php file.

I had the same prob. I run a shared hosting biz (friends only) and when I set up the account in question, the storage space on the server HD was VERY small (like 25 mb or something ridiculous like that). So installing WP put me over my limit. So no upgrades.

Went to my WHM and upgraded my package to 500 mb, problem solved. Hope this helps someone out – altho i doubt it, mine was a unique situation and it was just stupidity on my part.
