Try Manually upgrading. When all else fails, download a fresh copy of the latest.zip file for this release (top right on this page) to your computer, and use that to copy up. You may need to delete the wp-admin and wp-includes folders on your server (NOTE: do not delete the?wp-content?directory or your?wp-config.php?file)?Read the?Manual Update directions first.

BACKUP: If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. You can never have enough backups! See https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/wordpress-backups/

It may be the directory permissions on the server. Use an FTP client to check file and directory permissions. Directory permissions should be set to 755 and file permissions to 644. Please see this page for more info.

There’s also this related issue which you may find helpful.

@t-p and @mburridge, and the WP Community,

The directory permissions are set to 755 and file permissions to 644. I recalled that I also had a problem updating from WP 5 to WP 6. It was fixed at the time by updating the PHP to the latest version. With that in mind, I discussed the current problem with my hosting company. They upgraded the PHP from version 7 to version 8. Unfortunately this crashed my website. They reverted to version 7 and the site was restored.

“You may need to delete the wp-admin and wp-includes folders on your server….” I was advised that this action could also crash my site, so I have put this step on hold.`

I thank you again, and welcome more views and suggestions.

    SOLVED

@t-p and @mburridge and the WP Community,

I am pleased to share the solution with you.

I had almost exhausted my file quota on the server and that was why the upgrade failed. After deleting some old backup files, upgrade was successful.

Your help is very much appreciated.
