Hello! I’ve been using WordPress for about a month now, and I ran into some problems. My website is hosted on Sigmatic server and I’m using a theme called Dano. Everything’s been working fine but today, all of a sudden, I was unable to upload new files to media library. Apparently it’s unable to create a directory called ‘wp-content/uploads/2013/04’, and it asks me if a higher directory is being protected somehow?

Also when I’m trying to update a plug in called Contact Form 7 version 3.4 (which should be compatible with my wordpress 3.5.1), it asks me to give the rights to my server (server id, username, password) to make changes.. and when I put in this information, it’s unable to create directory /public_html/wp-content/upgrade/contact-form-7.tmp.

There was also another strange thing, earlier when I was trying to find a reason for this problem within my wordpress, all of my menu links stopped working and I got this “The requested URL /works/ was not found on this server.” error message on each link. I managed to fix it by making changes in the Permalinks settings (changed it back to Default, I had it in Article name setting). It had worked fine until today.

I don’t know why this is happening now, I didn’t change anything, just tried to create a new post to my blog, and that’s when I noticed I can’t add new files to media library. I would be grateful for any help! Thanks in advance.

  • Try changing the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766. If you still have problems, try 767, 775 or 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.

Most of this sounds like hebrew to me.. for example, I don’t know where I can find those files that I have to change. I can find the wp-content directory on Filezilla, and within it there are: languages, plugins, themes, upgrade, uploads and index.php. I don’t see Permissions anywhere. I’m sorry for not explaining this well.. I’m very new to all of this!

Okay, I must be blind. Now I see Permissions on the Filezilla window. For Uploads under wp-content, it says ‘drwxr-xr-x’ under Permissions tab. I can’t click on it or edit it. I don’t see those numbers that you suggested (766, 767, 775, 777) anywhere.

Did you review Changing_File_Permissions? In Filezilla, try right-clicking on the wp-content folder and selecting “Properties”.

Yes, I reviewed that information, but it’s difficult for me to understand. Now I found the location where I can change File attributes! I’ve changed the numeric value from 755 to 766, but it also asks if I wan to ‘Recurse into subdirectories’ and under it I have to select from these: ‘Apply to all files and directories’, ‘Apply to files only’, and ‘Apply to directories only’. Should I select any of these?

I just figured things out.. and it wasn’t at all what I thought! I had ran out of space on my server, which is why I couldn’t add any new files. Amateur much? ?? Thanks for your help in any case, Esmi!

Glad to hear that you managed to get to the root of the problem. ??
