• Hi,
Yesterday I noticed that I am unable to upload PDF’s and word docs. This issue is consistent across chrome and internet explorer. I am able to upload png’s.

I get the following message when I try to upload a PDF/ Word doc:

    Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at [email protected] to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I cleared my cache and all my plugins are up to date.

I am technologically challenged so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!
    Laura

  • These type of errors are often caused by a plugin or theme conflict. If you could start by switching to a default theme like Twenty Nineteen or Twenty Twenty, that would bee a great start. Should the error continue, then uninstall each plugin one by one to see what is conflicting, staying with the default theme activated. Hopefully, this helps, if not please come back as there are other options to try.

    Hi Tammie,

Thanks so much for the speedy response! I will try this…but if I switch the theme is that going to change the entire look of my live website?

install health check plugin which can be used in troubleshooting mode to deactivate all plugins and theme
might help narrow down the source of the issue

Thanks for the suggestion, health check now comes in WordPress itself so you don’t have to install a plugin, which is so great.

@lonstot if you have a heavily customized theme then yes please start with plugins to see which could be issue.

ok, so I installed the health check plugin and deactivated all plugins and changed the theme to twenty twenty, but the error still fires when I try to upload a document.

@karmatosed – just saw your response, I will try the plugins (outside of troubleshooting mode) and report back.

    Thanks,
