• Resolved Spot the Cat

    (@spot-the-cat)

I recently had to re-upload all my FTP files following a failed upgrade to 3.6 – my website crashed and just showed error messages.

I’ve managed to get the website up and running again, but am now not able to upload any photos, it says: “An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.” I’m also not able to see any of the photos I had previously uploaded, though this is not such an issue.

I know I must have missed a file somewhere when I was copying to FTP – please could anyone advise what I need to do to be able to resolve this?

    Many thanks

For info, the website is: https://www.bengalcatworld.com/home/

  • Regarding the old files not showing up, are you able to see them present in their respective directories using FTP.

Also could you check if the file upload is failing because of the file size or dropped internet connection? Do you get any more details at all besides “An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later”.

Thanks again for your reply, simplysaru.

The file size is not an issue, I have reduced them so they are less than half a MB and the internet connection is fine. And I don’t get any other details other than the message I copied and pasted.

Please can anyone advise? Or tell me where the “upload photo” facility is on the FTP files so I can check they are ok (without having to trawl through hundreds)?

    Many thanks

By default, uploads are stored in the wp-content/uploads folder.

Thanks, esmi – does that also control where the instructions are to upload new pics? As I said, I’m not too worried about seeing stored photos that I have previously uploaded as these are all on my computer anyway, but I desperately need to upload new ones from my computer to my blog which is very photo-focused.

You cannot just upload files to this folder. They have to be uploaded via WordPress as they also need to be registered in your database. Are you simply trying to replace files that were previously uploaded?

I don’t want to upload files to that folder. And I don’t want to replace old photos. I would like to upload new photos to my blog, but I get the error message consistently that I am not able to do so. I am not concerned about old photos, that was more of a side issue that I just mentioned as I thought it might help to understand the reasons why the problem exists. Sorry if I was unclear.

The error you posted above suggests that something may have changed in the configuration of your server. Have you spoken to your hosts about this?

Thank you. I spoke to them about the other problems I had and they said it was a WP problem, so that’s why I raised this issue here too. I will speak to them and see what they say.

You could also try checking your site’s error logs for a more specific error message. Again, your hosts should be able to help you in accessing your site’s error logs.

A manual update has finally sorted out all my problems, thanks to all of you who have helped me along the way.
