Unable to use Askimet API key for WPStats

  • I’ve tried using my Askimet API key to activate my WordPress Stats plugin. It’s telling me it’s not my key to use. I’ve tried so many different ways to get to the right key I’ve lost track.

    I can sign into my blog with the password for my account, but the same username and password DO NOT work when signing directly into www.ads-software.com.

    I think I now have several user names and passwords floating around out there because I keep reading a new solution to my problem and creating new accounts and still I don’t have a correct WordPress Stats API key.

    My Askimet is working just fine and has for over 7 months.

    Are there stats out there that I can use without an API key?

    Please help me. This is the only problem I’ve been having and it’s now been several months and I STILL don’t have a resolution.

    And every time I’m asked to log in with my wordpress.com username and password, it doesn’t recognize my password. I don’t have a problem accessing my blog on wordpress.com, only when I use the same username to access wordpress.com to get my API key for WordPress Stats. Which, if I’m reading the forum correctly, my Askimet API key should be the same key number, which I’ve copied and pasted into WordPress Stats, then it tells me it’s not MY key to use. Who’s key is it then? Where did it come from if it’s not mine (even though I got it from Askimet)?

    At this point I’ve tried so many names and passwords I’m lost, totally.

    I tried to recover my password for my username and when I received the email, WordPress.com RENAMED my account name from fattyfat to something unintelligible.

    This is what the email said:

    Someone has asked to reset the password for the following site and username. https://WordPress.com/

    Username: g2-66fbccf414aa5ac17088a3cf6754d643 To reset your password visit the following address, otherwise just ignore this email and nothing will happen.

    So now my fattyfat username was supposedly changed to g2-66fbccf414aa5ac17088a3cf6754d643.

    Somebody please help me.

    Try WHAT again? Resubmitting the question? Using the Askimet API number for WP Stats?

    Well, maybe you need to rephrase your question so as to point out to them that you are dealing with a WordPress.com API key that is not working, and that your username has changed to that weird string, and so on.

    There is absolutely nothing we can do to help you here. Your API key has some kind of problem and you need to deal with that first. The fact that you’re using a self-hosted blog means precisely zero.

    Did you ever get an answer that worked?
    It’s confusing. I stumbled through it, but finally got it to work.

    1. I had signed up for a blog at WP.org
    2. I had to sign up for a ‘username’ at WP.com to get the key for Akismet which was emailed to me. (just the username…nothing else)
    3. I entered that key into the area at my blog dashboard (under WP.org). At first it didn’t work. I found some instructions that said to type it in, not cut and paste. I did and it worked. (could this be the ‘simple’ answer?)
    4. I got another page that said something like “not quite ready, enter key again.” I did. Voila! it all came together.

    I hope my process is accurate and can save someone time and frustration.

    Now I can see the Akismet navigation in my left sidebar. I’m, at this writing, waiting for the plugin to come on board (got a note saying I was rushing—need to give it 20 minutes or so).

    This did not happen as simply as I wrote it. It actually took me over an hour to figure it out. I was confused by having to get something from WP.com when I have WP.org. I thought I had clicked something in error to be hearing from WP.com. I was confused by the system questioning me about being the owner of the key, and then the back and forth thing with the usernames and passwords, especially trying to sign into WP.com within my WP.org dashboard, using my WP.org password. That was weird. (same as the original poster). Maybe old programming heads know exactly what to do, but for us ‘newer’ folk, the instructions are not all that forthcoming.
