The files I upload to my media library are displaying as a broken image. The files that are already in there are fine. But when I upload a new jpg the upload seems to be successful but the image doesn’t display (there’s just a broken image graphic). If I select edit, the file actually does display in the edit mode. It does not display anywhere else.

The file does not appear to be uploading to my server if I go to the wp-content/uploads/userphoto directory on my hosting account, but the image shows-up in the media library although it displays as a broken image, it also shows as a broken image if I add it to a page.

I just moved this site as a copy of a previous site by restoring a Backup Buddy copy. The original site is working fine.

I have other WordPress sites and they’re not having this problem.

Here are thing I’ve done so far.

    1. Disabled all plugins – no change in results
    2. Logged out, cleared browser and rebooted my machine – no change in results
    3. Change permissions on the upload folder to 775
    4. Edited an image after uploading and resaved it – no change
    5. Upgraded all of my plugins – no change
    6. Upgraded WP to 3.5.2 – no change

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

  • Try switching to Twenty Twelve theme with all plugins turned off and see if you have problems with images.

I switched to Twenty Twelve them and deactivated all of my plugins and the problem is still happening. Any other suggestions?

Please post a link to a publically accessible page on your site that demonstrates this problem whilst using the Twenty Twelve theme and no active plugins.

Here is a link to a page – the image is supposed to be on the right of the first person’s (Dean Shrock’s) bio. You’ll see a little box that is supposed to be the image.

This particular image is pretty large, so I selected to make it 90% of it’s normal size and it went from filling the entire screen to that little tiny item – which is obviously a different problem – but possibly related.

    Thanks for your help.

The empoweringguest.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07 directory itself is a 404. The directory for July is absent. You might try temporarily changing the permissions on /wp-content to 0777, and then see if WordPress will create the directory for July. If it does, that will give you some time to sort out any possible ownership/permissions issues that might be the result of the new (moved/cloned) site. Don’t forget to put the permissions back afterwards.

Is there something I need to do, in order to get Word Press to create the directory? Should I go in through my FTP program and create the directory or does it need to be created by WP because WP will log it into the database?

At this point I have made the change to the permissions for the wp-content directory to 0777.

Then I deleted the image and re-uploaded it – with no success.

Then I logged out of WP and re-logged in – and re-uploaded the image – again with no success and I’ve looked with my ftp program and there is not folder for July 2013

While awaiting a response, I did some further research and found that I needed to change the URL in the Media Settings for Word Press. The system had //wp-content/uploads so I inserted the folder name for this particular site between the // and the entire problem was resolved. When I did that I still had the permissions on the wp-content directory set to 777 and the uploads directory set to 775. I have since changed them and have gone back to my original theme and everything is working perfectly.

I also reactivated all of my plugins and everything is still working great!

    Thanks for your help.
