Unable to verify site ownership
-
For Site Kit set-up I get this error message:
“Let’s verify your ownership of [mydomain]com.stage.site. We’ll need to add a verification token to your site HTML code.
The necessary verification token could not be found on your site. This may be related to your site using a page caching plugin. Please flush your home page cache and then try again.”
I cleared cache (via WordPress Admin panel and browser) and talked to customer support at my hosting site (we coordinated together for 2 hours+ trying different things). But unfortunately nothing seemed to work, and he recommended I come here to ask.
I am doing verification via my @[domain name].com email that is hosted on Gsuite as well.

@labtest It’s possible there may be restrictions on the GSuite account you are using, as Site Kit creates a new Google Cloud Platform project with the associated Google account.
Can you check and see if Site Kit setup works when reset and connected with your own individual Google account (providing you have access to that property in Search Console)?
You can also check and see if setup completes using another WordPress site hosted on the same server, with your own Google account.
@jamesosborne I reset Site Kit and tried via another email (a personal @gmail.com one) I got the same error.
And not sure about the same server part (my website is hosted on DreamHost) however nothing seems to verify things.
Could the verify issue be about the stage site? Should it say my domain name instead? Also maybe a plugin part of my wordpress theme?
@labtest You are correct, the issue could potentially be as a result of a plugin conflict or configuration. Can you attempt setup again after resetting Site Kit ((Site Kit > Settings > Admin Settings > Reset Site Kit) ), but when setting up attempt from a browser incognito window, preferably using a Chromium based browser. If you have a VPN in use or other browser extension that can also impact setup.
Be sure you have access to that domain name in Search Console using your personal Google account, which you can use to verify ownership.
@jamesosborne Where is the “settings > admin settings” option for Site Kit? When I go to the Site Kit Plugin, the only thing I see on the page is:
“The Site Kit plugin is active but requires setup
Site Kit Service will guide you through 3 simple setup steps.”Additionally, I did the manual option (pasted the code to the Head) and Google detected my code/verified it (up to 2 weeks to process page came up). However, when I still try to set-up Site Kit the same error also arises (unable to verify via the plugin).
@labtest If the initial Site Kit connection has not been completed can you remove the header code you manually inserted before attempting again? Can you share your URL also and I can see if I can spt anything which may be impacting setup.
@jamesosborne I deleted it (now publishing that update from the stage site to the live site). My url is labrule.com
@labtest I can’t see anything impacting setup from my side. Rather than attempting setup from a G Suite email on a staging site can you attempt setup using a personal Google associated email, from an account which has access to that property from within Search Console? You can first of all deactivate Site Kit in full or delete the plugin from your WordPress admin dashboard.
@jamesosborne I added the property to a personal email address via Google Search Console (and deleted Site Kit from my WP Admin).
How do I attempt setup within Search Console?
*Edit: Did you mean try setup again (re-install Site Kit after I did everything above, then use the personal email that has labrule.com as a property?)
I just did the above edit, but the same error came.
**Edit 2: Should it keep saying “Let’s verify your ownership of labrulecom.stage.site” instead of labrule.com?
@labtest As long as you have the site setup from within Search Console and you have access to that property there should be no problems. Correct that you should use an email address which has access to that property.
Before setting up Site Kit check your general settings to ensure your Site Address and WordPress Address match, listing the correct URL for both.
@jamesosborne I went on a journey this past day with this. Bear with me:
1) I initially (on the stage WordPress) changed the url links to labrule.com for both, and via Site Kit it actually verified! but then I broke my WordPress Panel (:/ a couple hours later it got fixed)
2) I figured out that I should be using the live site WordPress panel. Doing it there, when I click verify and I got a 404 error “OOOPS, SORRY! WE COULDN’T FIND IT
You have requested a page or file which doesn’t exist”I should also add, between this the Adsense review I had initially submitted (by putting code in the header) also got rejected by Google (so not sure if it might have led to #2 happening). If you could (if you are versed in this) could you point out any potential issues I could fix with labrule.com
Thank you for your patience and time with me! It has been a pressing time, but your support is appreciated.
@labtest Thanks for the thorough update. We can start off attempting to get your site connected before we then work on connecting the AdSense module.
The primary product that Site Kit uses to verify your site is Search Console, so can you first of all login to Search Console and check that your primary site is added, and confirm your personal Google associated email address has access? Check that you have the correct protocol also for that domain.
After everything seems good from the Search Console side please follow the steps below:
1. Deactivate and delete the Site Kit plugin
2. Install Site Kit once more from “Plugins > Add New”
3. Open a browser incognito window
4. Install Site Kit and setup again, while logging into your personal Google account once askedLet me know how you get on, if you encounter any issues share any notices.
@labtest I’m following up on your support topic. Were you able to go through the troubleshooting steps above? Thank you.
@reneesoffice @jamesosborne Thank you for following up!
For a couple of days after I would get a 404 error when I tried to proceed. So I decided to try to fix up AdSense (which ran into an issue due to some of the initial feedback here that I got mixed up on, which I will get into).
Right now (~20 minutes ago) Site Kit finally got set up! I did incognito/purged cache/updated and it worked (had the domain connected to the email’s search console). Pretty excited about that, really appreciate the support @jamesosborne provided (and @reneesoffice following up as well), I value you going out of your way on this.
Back to the AdSense issue related to Site Kit. Before I was a little confused about AdSense/Site Kit. My initial read on @jamesosborne ‘s feedback above was use an alternate email to set up Site Kit (and by extension AdSense).
I believe my site is up to AdSense’s policies however I get “You don’t already have another AdSense account, as we only allow one account per person. If you do have another AdSense account, please close it in order to use this one.”
I created another account because of my initial read on the advice here was to do that (in order to set-up Site Kit & AdSense) [From James: “It’s possible there may be restrictions on the GSuite account you are using, as Site Kit creates a new Google Cloud Platform project with the associated Google account.”].
But when I go to either account’s AdSense there isn’t an option to delete (the options on the left-hand side are whited out, asking you to verify the site first — but the site will not be verified until you delete an account, thus creating an infinite loop that I am stuck in).
The only option I have is to permanently delete one Google Account (gmail and everything). I did do that but it does not work (I believe it is because it takes a while for everything to delete).
I really would prefer to keep that alternative Google account (it was the support email for my business/has several things linked to it). But I do not see a way out of this, and it has been pretty stressful trying to navigate the situation. I understand AdSense is pretty much self-service, but I would appreciate any support in navigating the problem here.
Thank you for reading this short-novel of a message! ??
@labtest Good to hear you managed to get your connection issues resolved, thanks for the update.
When setting up the AdSense module I was referring to setting up AdSense with your personal Google email, the same one you used to successfully setup Site Kit. If you were using a GSuite email previously it may have restricted Site Kit setup. Yu should only be using one Google account, and adding your domains to that account within AdSense.
If you want to open a new support topic in relation to the AdSense module and confirm the URL I can inspect your site to ensure Site Kit has placed the ad code correctly.
@mehmood11 Can you please open a new support topic as per forum guidelines and we would be happy to assist from there.
Please include all relevant information to your support topic, including your Site Health Information.
