Unauthorized user registrations

I have set up the Simple Membership plugin so that only selected members should have access to certain pages as subscribers. To do this, they are not allowed to register themselves, but receive the access data from an admin. However, I have now discovered that (probably via a bot) unauthorized user registrations have taken place, all with the same name but different usernames and passwords. How is this possible and how can it be prevented?
