unconfirmed plugin does not send activation e-mail does not populate buddypress

Hello,
I have 22 buddypress members, 5264 users and 133 subscribers. I realized I have not been getting members because the activation e-mail has not been sent out. So I installed the unconfirmed plugin. When I activate some members they are not added to the members list. When I send a activation e-mail it is not sent I know the e-mail is not sent because I tested it on myself, this is after installing the SMTP plugin.
So I have not been able to solve anything.
