So I have been using this plugin just to automatically add in my @2x files when I add an image to a post.

As a designer, I normally add my own images, I set the size up in photoshop and make 2 versions. I never even use thumbnail sizes. I set those to 0 because I dont even like the cropping of wordpress.

But lately I have been getting lazy and thinking I should start using it. So with wp Retina how exactly does it work? which version do I upload? just the small one?
And it creates a bigger version? And its not bad quality?

    So if I upload a 500px x 500px and I have thumbnail size set to 250px x 250px, what will happen? (i normally will upload a 500px and a 1000px for retina).

what if the thumbnail size is bigger?

I also use img{ max-width: 100%} not sure if this will effect anything….

Any info on this would be awesome thanks!

Which image do you use in your post? Full-size? Large? Another size? That’s the first and most important question ??

But yes, if you thumbnail size is 250×250 and you upload 500×500, normally you should get automatically the 250×250 created by WP and the plugin will create a 500×500 retina version of your thumbnail and use it on retina device. You can upload a bigger image, the biggest the better (the most chance it can cover all the required image sizes).

If you upload 500×500 and the thumbnail is 400×400, then the plugin will not be able to create the image. It will show a little red square in the retina dashboard for the thumbnail.

    thanks for the quick response!

well truthfully for my portfolio I use 640x 360 sized images and that means retina image of 1280 x 720.
So I should upload the larger of the 2? or even larger?
if I upload the larger of the 2, what do I call it? @2x or no?

    Im filled with questions!

    Hello! (morning here)

Yeah, you should upload your 1280×720 image directly, with a normal name (not a retina name or anything, juste a nice friendly name). You can also upload a much bigger image.

WP will create the 640x 360 size and retina will create the 1280×720. If it is exactly the same as the image you uploaded, it will actually copy it directly and name this new copy with @2x.

Thanks a lot! That’s my side business. In exactly one month, I have my first book in English coming out: https://www.amazon.com/Abandoned-Japan-Jordy-Meow/dp/2361951320

You design nice websites too, at least your main website is really cool. I wish I could do that for my plugins, my website is really simple and straightforward (Meow Apps).

I think your website is very good!
Its funny how we see everyone else’s stuff is always nicer than our own….

I am never fully satisfied with what I make.
Well anyway, I quit my terrible job a little over a month ago. I am starting to make websites and do freelance… its a new thing so hopefully it starts working!

I like theming and I now use underscores to quicken up my work. Its really awesome.
    Thanks for your hep!

    Last question!
Do I need an image optimizer or wp retina takes care of that or what?

    Plugin Author Jordy Meow

    (@tigroumeow)

If you like theming you could do me a favor ?? Haha, I am working on making themes compatible with my WP/LR Sync plugin these days. Now it would be awesome to have a WordPress plugin that replicates the Smugmug standard theme, a lot of people would run to it! ??

About your question, I actually wrote an article about it last week:
    https://apps.meow.fr/smushit-vs-ewww-image-optimizer/

The plugin doesn’t take care of it since it’s another big subject.

When you say “the plugin doesnt take care of it” I assume you mean wp-retina doesnt take care of it. But the ewww plugin does?

Also I have never made a plugin. What sort of theme do you want?
I have never heard of smug smug.

Yes, EWWW does the optimization, and it works with Retina. I am in contact with the developer, he’s a very nice guy.

It would be awesome to have a theme like smugmug.com. Have a look at my website: https://www.meow.fr. This is a smugmug website. If I can find a theme that does this display, then in the backend my new plugin can do all the rest (all the glue with Lightroom).
