Just received an email saying my website has met the criteria for a commercial site and I must upgrade by Aug. 8th.

Here’s the thing: I don’t think it’s fair. It’s a hobby website and not an income source.

I placed a few “Buy me a coffee” links around and shared a referral link to my hosting company, but I don’t even make enough from the site to cover my yearly domain and hosting costs, which are lower than the cost of a JetPack bundle BTW.

Still, by these harsh guidelines, JetPack considers my site a “commercial site”. ARE YOU KIDDING?!? You are not differentiating actual commercial sites from the small fish who get a couple of bucks a year!

Jetpack can set its usage criteria and pricing, and users like me who don’t agree with them are free to remove the plugin, which is what I’ll be doing very soon.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi there,

Thanks for taking the time to post. I hear where you’re coming from, and how we’re handling commercial sites is actively evolving. While we may change this in the future, right now any site that attempts to earn money in any way is classed as a commercial site. Right now we don’t differentiate between sites that make a lot of money, or only a little money from their commercial efforts.

If you ever remove the donations buttons and hosting referral links, you’d be very welcome to use Jetpack Stats again for free.

Let us know if we can help with anything else!
