W3 Total Cache was clashing with my theme – some built in features no longer worked.

I deactivated the plugin (first clearing cache) and the features came back.

Decided to uninstall W3 Total Cache

Suddenly had no admin access. Front end is OK.

    I got ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS for wp-admin

Got a default wordpress .htaccess (from another basic WP site with generic settings)

I now can get into wp-admin but every admin page I go to states “Can’t be found”

I look in via ftp and the files are there and no recent modify date changes.

Is there an easy fix for this?

I have a local server copy but the online version had a number of updates over the last few weeks I am trying to avoid repeating.

Refreshed the wp-admin page and got ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS again

downloaded the .htaccess file via cpanel file manager and there had been no changes since last upload.

    – so can rule out issues with that

Found a solution to turn off all plugins via database
    https://support.hostgator.com/articles/specialized-help/technical/wordpress/disableenable-all-wordpress-plugins-via-the-database

It let me in to admin and I was able to activate them one at a time.

The problem was of my own making (as usual). I had forgotten about the “Performance tab / Delete all caches” tab in top admin bar, so I installed another plugin, Clear Cache For Me, to make it quicker to access clear all. The plugin claimed it was compatible with W3 Total Cache. Problem arose when I uninstalled W3 Total Cache first leaving Clear Cache For Me still active.

I do find W3 Total Cache the most effective of the free minify/cache plugins but it can also be the most incompatible with other popular plugins. Depending on settings the discrepancies won’t display if still logged in as admin.

Test thoroughly on local version of website and while logged out of admin before using it on a live site.
