Unwanted design changes with responsive menu

When I configure the navigation menu for responsiveness there appears a white gap between the menu items on large screens (Chrome, Firefox and IE), and the search button moves beneath the search form instead of sitting to the right (IE). Why? I there any way to avoid this?

I haven’t done any changes to the theme, only installed the latest version on a fresh WordPress site.
