• I am using 2014 theme. I have uploaded the header and named categories which appear on the left sidebar and which work. When I create a new post, there is a black rectangle of space above it on the Home page. The one no-one wants but which insists on existing.

I did have pages (home/main menu/history/etc/ set up across the top but as it is a mystery how to specify a post to a particular page, I have given up and just use categories instead. I understand that pages have a different definition on Word Press. There is a facility to create and add new pages which I have done but despite several attempts and reading the lost WorldPress manual I am utterly unable to define a page where my posts should go. This is frustrating. It is easy if you know how but it is very difficult to know how. I really feel it should not be this difficult.

So I have two issues. The first is this unwanted rectangle of space and the second is to get posts to my pages if I set them up again. I am able to put them into the categories and this is I suppose as good as it will get.

  • Hello Declan, could you please provide a link to your website? It would really help in trying to find out what’s causing the black rectangle to appear.

Re ‘unable to define a page where my posts should go’ – the default WordPress setup automatically places your posts on your homepage, but this can be changed. Basically you need to create the page, tell WordPress to display your posts on that page, then add the page link to your menu.

    1) First, create a page for your posts by going to Pages > Add New. Give your page a title, e.g., Blog. Don’t add any content. Click Publish.

    2) Go to Settings > Reading. Next to Front page displays ‘A static page’ should be ticked. In the drop down box next to Front page, select the page you want to be the homepage, e.g., Home. In the drop down box next to Posts page, select the ‘Blog’ page you created. Save changes.

    3) Go to Appearance > Menus. Under the Pages heading you should see the Blog page you created. Tick the box and click Add to Menu. It will appear as the last item on the bottom (you can drag and drop into place). Save menu.

Thank you obi-wan-kenobi for this. I have managed to master this now thanks to your help.

Would you be kind enough to help me with another problem? I still have a difficulty with my mysterious black rectangle but only if I set a post as a sticky post.

Here is the link to my page: https://www.mulligansbook.com

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it,

    Kind Regards,

    Declan.
