• Dear readers,

i’m quite new to wordpress, so forgive me any “stupid” questions …

I have created a small website with wordpress 3.0.1 several months ago. I installed WP with default theme twentyten, then modified this theme to my needs with the main css-file and also some small modifications of the templates (i guess that was a mistake?). The theme folder i am using is still called “twentyten”, and there is no other theme installed.

As i have experienced that my theme was reset (overwritten) when updating from 3.0.0 to .0.1, i’d like to avoid this with the update to .0.4.

Question is how to do that best …
Should i duplicate the twentyten folder, calling it “myowntheme”, then updating and afterwards set the theme back to my new clone if the default one is overwritten? Will this work, or will i eliminate the purpose of the update by doing this?

Backup strategy: if i backup the whole root folder of my website, as well as the database, will i be able to restore quickly if things go terribly wrong?

    thanks for your help
    Hirnsaege

That’s the wrong way to do it, but yes, you have to. With every update the twentyten folder will get overwritten and you will lose your edits. If you don’t move those files to a new directory you will lose any changes you made to your Twenty Ten theme.

The right way to do it is to make your theme a child theme of Twenty Ten and go from there. It’s less work and more maintainable.
