David, I am also using another plugin called enable media replace. I love one feature in that plugin: when i want to replace an image, the plugin shows two options:
    1. Just replace the file
Note: This option requires you to upload a file of the same type (image/jpeg) as the one you are replacing. The name of the attachment will stay the same (vista-08.jpg) no matter what the file you upload is called.
    2. Replace the file, use new file name and update all links
Note: If you check this option, the name and type of the file you are about to upload will replace the old file. All links pointing to the current file (vista-08.jpg) will be updated to point to the new file name.

I prefer the 2nd option most times coz it will update all links that the previous image uses.

When i use MLA to import new images, it also gives an option: replace the old image(i guess the new image and old image should have same name, right?). MLA supports bulk replace which the other plugin doesn’t support. It is a very good feature when i got many images to replace at a time. The problem is it doesn’t update the links. If an old image is attached to a post, then i have to go to that post and update the image again. When it comes to bulk, this can be a big job to update all the links manually.

I haven’t found MLA supports to update all the links when doing the media replacing. So i am wondering if this can be supported in the future versions?

Thank you for the suggestion and the detailed description of your Enable Media Replace use.

You wrote “When i use MLA to import new images …” In fact, MLA does not have any features of its own for importing or replacing files in the Media Library. I am not quite sure where the “replace the old image” option coms from, but it’s not part of MLA.

You wrote “MLA supports bulk replace“, which looks like a reference to the Media/Assistant submenu Bulk Edit area; is that right? The Bulk Edit feature lets you edit most of the fields associated with an item, such as the Caption and ALT Text. It does not do anything with/to the file associated with the item.

I have explicitly avoided adding any MLA features that alter or replace the file associated with a Media Library item because it’s harder than it might seem. Here are some earlier support topics regarding the topic and Enable Media Replace:

Custom Field Map All Attachments not working

    WP Document Revisions

    replace media error

As you can see, it’s a long-standing subject. I may come back to it and do something in a future MLA version, but I have no immediate plans in this area. I am marking this topic resolved, but please update it if you have specific problems or questions regarding the MLA/Enable Media Replace combination.
