• Hello, I’m a new user to WP and am legally blind. I use special software to help me read screen text.

My question is about updating WP. I cannot get the auto update to work. The instructions for manual updating says to delete all WP files then install update. Won’t deleting wp-content delete my plugins and themes?

I appreciate any guidance from anyone.

    Best,

    Bill Shiver

  • Hi there Bill!

Do you know if the auto update gives you any specific error messages when it fails to work?

Additionally, have you tried disabling or deactivating all of your widgets BEFORE attempting the auto-update? Sometimes, enabled widgets can interfere with WordPress updates so deactivating widgets oftentimes fixes problems with updates.

For the manual install, yes, deleting all content means your themes and plugins will be deleted.

What I would recommend doing before you do a manual install is this:

    1) MAKE A BACKUP of all of your themes and plugins.

    2) EXPORT your posts and SAVE them. (You can export and save by clicking on the ‘Tools’ panel in your Admin Control Panel and clicking on ‘Export’ and saving)

    3) SAVE A COPY of your current wp-config.php and wp-config-sample.php files.
