Update breaks site

Attempted 4.0 update on my staging site. This update does not work. I get the following error messages and the form is NOT displayed anymore on my site.

I get the message, “Email Subscribers data update – Your database is being updated in the background. Taking a while? Click here to run it now.” However, attempting to click on the “run it now” link just generates errors.

I’ve lost all my subscribers in the database.
