• This is way too complex and there are too many things that can go wrong.

If I already have the MySQL database set up (and backed up), why can’t I just uninstall 1.2 and then upload the 2.0 files? Since I can’t find a 1.5.x download, this appears to be my only recourse.

Can I leave MOST of my 1.2 files and only upload a few 2.0 files? If so, which ones? (For example, the index.php, wp-config.php, wp-layout.css files. Do I need any of the other original files?)

WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO UPGRADE GIVEN THAT I HAVE NO SUPPORT FROM MY HOST?

NOTE: My hosting service doesn’t make anything beyond 1.2 available and offers no guarantees/help if I upgrade. The only thing I seem to be able to do is upload files one at a time. I now have 2000+ spam comments I can’t control – this is why I want to upgrade since no one can/will help me with 1.2 problems.

I’ve printed the various FAQs and none of them address my particular situation.

If someone could help me – after repeated unanswered requests – to kill the 1.2 comment spam, then I wouldn’t need to go through this. I’ve already turned off comments globally and gone back through and turned off comments on individual comments. Moderation queue now 2000+ and there doesn’t seem to be a way of even deleting what’s there except one-at-a-time, by hand.

  • It’s really hard to help with 1.2 since I’ve never used it, besides the fact that I understand from many many posts on this forum that there is NO WAY to kill the comment spam, OR to keep a 1.2 forum secure.

It’s simply not at all a good idea to run it. And upgrading isn’t that hard: just upgrade 1.2 to 1.5.2 first, then to 2.0 (though you don’t even have to use 2.0 as 1.5.2 is fully secure and there are ways to handle the comment spam in it). Alphaoide gave you the address to download 1.5.2, and certainly, if you have problems with the upgrade you can post back; most of us still have 1.5.2 in situ somewhere.

BEFORE YOU START, BACKUP YOUR DATABASE AND FILES. That cannot be stressed enough! Best of luck with it; most upgrades go pretty smoothly, but if you have no backups in the odd case where there’s a problem you have no recourse….

[Can you not use a normal ftp client so you can upload files and folders all at once? If not, if the only thing you can do is use a broken-sounding host’s file manager, then it is probably time for a decent host….]

    Which do you want:

    1. To keep your current theme
    OR
    2. Drop the theme and get a new one after upgrading

    1 means more work
2 means a very easy upgrade indeed

Which door are you choosing ? ??

One other thing: the databases are not compatible between 1.2 and 1.5, or 1.5 and 2.0. Which is why you have to follow the upgrade path, and do the steps one after the other. Running the upgrade file is the only way to make the database “become” compatible with the newer version….

Many thanks. I successfully (it appears) have upgraded from 1.2 to 1.5.2. This seems like a good place to stop – I’ll go to 2.0 I’m sure in the fullness of time. I may have some questions about changing the theme from the current default but, for now, I’m just happy the process turned out to be so painless. Also, removal of around 2,000 spam comments took only two mouseclicks and about 10 seconds … sweet.

    Again, thanks.
