How do you think the update will go if I just press the update now button?
The site has no pages, 20500 posts, 24000 comments and a bunch of plugins.
I will have to update php to the latest version, I made a note of that.

    My biggest concern:
One of the current plugins is overwriting the schedule function. Instead of scheduling posts, it acts as “event day” for an event calendar we use. All posts have 0’s instead of “published date”. I tried importing them in another wordpress and they appear as drafts.

My question is – will all these “scheduled” posts revert to drafts when we update?
Other than that, I would welcome any suggestions or guidelines.

    Thank you! ??
    Cristina.

  • Hey, Cristina!

    Here’s what I would do…

    1. Install a new copy WordPress someplace else (subdirectory of that site or a different site).

    2. Install a plugin like UpdraftPlus Backup and back up the entire site.
    3. Copy the files it makes (they’re in the wp-content\updraft folder.
    4. Install the plugin UpdraftPlus Backup and add the Migrate add-on in the new site.
    5. Copy your .zip files from step 2 above, to the \wp-content\updraft folder on the new site.
    6. Open up UpdraftPlus Backup and restore the site.
    7. Now try your update for WordPress and all the plugins. If it breaks, then your original site is not harmed.

    Hello, Augustin & all,

Sorry for not checking back. Thank you, the update worked smooth and now we are happily customising our new theme.
The posts did not revert to drafts, as I imagined.
There is one problem I cannot fix – as I was saying, the “schedule post” function has been modified to publish future posts. It served an old plugin which is disabled.
Now we’d like to use the schedule post option which is super handy, but the update and switching the theme did not solve it.

It seems like the modified functions.php is in the old theme folder, so why should this affect the new theme’s behaviour?

It’s solved. I’ve found the old plugin responsible for the schedule post problem. ??
