Update issue

  • Our site was hacked by the pharma hack. We were able to clean it up by removing the offending items from the db but we never did find the rogue code. My suspicion is that a plugin was compromised, then updated and/or replaced deleting the code before we realized there was an issue.

    We have been clean for over a month so I do not think we have been re-infected. One bit of behavior that we have been unable to resolve is that the updates on the dashboard are acting funny. Normally, if plugin or wordpress updates are available the number is next to the Updates and the Plugins on the left.

    On our site, the number may show up, but if we click on Plugins, the number disappears. Example, you log into the dashboard and it says 5 updates are available (1 wp and 4 plugins). If I click on updates I get a list of updates for both wordpress and plugins that are needed. I update wp and then it says everything is up to date. The next day or two, the number will show back up for the remaining updates that are needed. If I click on Plugins, the number goes away. If I click back to Updates is says everything is current.

    We have done several WP updates since this behavior started. I’m not sure if it is related to the pharma hack or not. Seems likely that some code is out there that is trying to not allow updates, but I have been unable to find the offending code.

    Any help would be appreciated! We are running WP 3.0.4

  • istoledo, if you want to remove the update notices altogether, you can add this code to your functions.php file:

    remove_action('admin_notices', 'update_nag', 99);

    I appreciate that doesn’t solve the technical problem but it does remove the annoyance.

    The only other suggestion I can offer at this time would be to disable all your plugins, delete them and restore with fresh plugins. This may reset the versioning numbers.
