On 6/8/20 I updated the plugin from version 2.0.1 to 2.1.1. The update appears to have messed up the FROM field function. In the from field it is grayed out, but it does show the correct address.

This address was set as a forwarding address that goes to my main email address. Now the emails from the site are now being sent from my main email address rather than the forwarding address I had set up. In Gmail, I have it set up correctly as an additional account, as an alias.

Before the update the site was sending emails correctly from my forwarding address.

    Hi,

the “From Email” field is always grayed out (disabled) and is ignored for Gmail mailer since the plugin will use the Gmail/Gsuite email address used in the authorization process (the email address displayed in the “Authorization” section of the plugin setting next to the text “Connected as”).

Setting other email addresses in the “From Email” field caused a lot of issues for users, that’s why we are ignoring it in the last few version of our plugin (starting with v1.9.0), but this change was not introduced in the v2.1.1.

The Gmail/Gsuite aliases feature is on our radar. Unfortunately, I don’t have any ETA regarding support of the aliases for Gmail/GSuite accounts, but we still consider this to be implemented because this is a really handy feature.

    Take care!

Hi Greg, can you confirm the alias problem is new with the latest update? I was having no problems with the WP Mail plugin sending from my nominated alias account. Since the update my business confirmations and messages from the website are defaulting to show my primary gmail address in the from field of emails. Granted it showing a title as required but I want to see the physical business email address on there not my personal gmail account which has no relevance to my business – it also looks very unprofessional.

    Thanks very much.

In fact I just rolled back the version to the previous version and everything works fine. Won’t be updating to the latest version now until this is resolved. Will it be looked at? Getting accurate use of alias emails is on the the main features of the plugin!!

If you’ve not already install “WP Rollback”. Get back to the last version and everything works fine – thankfully.

This is a big miss if it’s not working correctly going forward, looks really unprofessional if not sorted out and for an an app with 1MN+ users this should be a priority free version or not.

    Thanks

@capuderg, I don’t think you understand the issue. The issue popped up after v2.0.1. Like @edbright78, before updating I was having no problems with the WP Mail plugin sending from my nominated alias account. Now they are sending from my primary address. Which I don’t want.

    Hi @fkildoo and @edbright78,

yes, I can confirm that the Gmail/Gsuite alias can’t be set as the “From Email” in the latest version of the plugin (v2.1.1).

Please downgrade to version v2.0.1, where that is possible.

The issue is, that we never supported the alias feature. This current set-up that worked for you is a “work-around”. We still have this alias feature in our backlog, but I can’t give you any ETA on when it will be implemented.

Sorry for your trouble and thank you for your patience.

    Take care!

Thanks for the response. Isn’t that pretty much one of the main features of the free GMAIL plugin? “This allows you to use your professional email address and improve email deliverability”.

If people can’t send using alias’ it’s kinda loses the attraction.

Out of interest can you send via Gmail using alias’ in the paid version or has this facility just disappeared for now?

    Hi @edbright78,

no, the Google/Gmail mailer in our plugin is the same in Lite as in Pro versions. Not differences, so in Pro, aliases are not supported as well.

“This allows you to use your professional email address and improve email deliverability”.

This quote is trying to say, that email deliverability is better via Google/Gmail API than it is via the SMTP.

The alias feature will be supported in the future, but I don’t have an ETA when that will be available.

I’ll update this post as soon as it will be live.

    Have a nice day!

Can confirm that the send from stopped working for Gmail in the most recent update 2.1.1 and that it works if rolled back to 2.0.1.

I’d highly recommend enabling this feature again, even if you do so with a warning that it might not work as intended. It works fine when configured properly.

Also, this should be mentioned in your change log so developers are aware of the adjustment to functionality of the plugin.

    Hi @refinedimpact,

It works fine when configured properly.

That’s why the From Email input is disabled for Gmail. Users had problems when they didn’t configure this field correctly. That happened to a lot of users.

We try to mention the changes in changelog, but as I said, we didn’t support this alias feature and we didn’t know that users are using this field for this functionality, so we also didn’t add it to the changelog.

    Take care!

    Thanks for the reply @capuderg

Is it possible to just provide a disclaimer/warning, or maybe a support article on how to set up a send from address properly in Gmail, instead of disabling this feature completely for those of us who know how to use it?

    Hi @refinedimpact,

we will add the Gmail alias feature in one of our future releases until then I would suggest staying on v2.0.1 if you need Gmail alias.

    Take care!

I’m not happy with this. This is the second major issue since 2.x. The first one was breaking WooCommerce and I missed out on a lot of orders. And now the alias doesn’t work anymore and I have to downgrade again.

    Hi everyone,

We just released an update (v2.2.1) which adds the Gmail alias support.

Could you please try to updated and test it out? In the plugin settings, after you are authorized with a google account, you will be able to select the “From Email” address from all your registered aliases. You have to register the alias in the “Send mail as” setting in the Gmail settings. More info here.

    Thank you very much!

    Have a nice day!
