    Hello,

I am using version 1.0.7 of the Edin theme. I’m getting a message asking me to update to version 1.0.8.1. I’ve tried finding details of what exactly has been changed, but I can’t find any details. I’m a bit hesitant to update, since it says all my customization will be lost.

I know it recommends using child themes, and when I clicked on the link to explore this further, I realized it was above my head. I have basic knowledge of HTML and CSS, but really nothing more than that.

For this reason, I’m a bit hesitant to update, especially since I can’t find any information on the actual changes. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!

  • The new version of Edin has added site-logo support through Jetpack. By activating Jetpack on your site with Edin you can now easily upload a logo through the Customizer.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-logo/

You can see what changes have been made by looking in the log in the theme’s readme.txt file.

    = 1.0.8 – Nov 2 2014 =
    * Update Site Logo template tags for Jetpack.

Have you edited the original Edin theme files directly? If so, what types of changes have you made? If it’s only CSS changes, you can do that through a custom CSS plugin – no child theme needed.

An easy way to add custom CSS is to install the Jetpack plugin and activate the Custom CSS module. You’ll then add your custom CSS in the new stylesheet editor that’ll appear in your dashboard, under Appearance > Edit CSS.

Keeping your changes to the plugin means you’ll never lose any tweaks when updating the theme.

I think most of my edits were to the CSS file, so that will probably work fine. Thanks for the suggestion!

The only thing I can recall that wasn’t CSS was adding something to the header file in order to use a Google font. But that’s probably easy to add back in.

    Great, you’re very welcome!

Instead of having to pop that code back into the theme every time the theme’s updated, and if you’re not still interested in making a child theme, you might want to check out the handy Google Fonts method macmanx (James) explains how to do using just a custom CSS plugin:
