Hi wordpressers, so far -I speak about many many versions in the past- I could always update wordpress without problems.

With this last update, I see the error message “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now.”

I never saw an automatic update, always had to do manually and enter my FTP password all the time. I recently saved the ftp password in the config file so it would not be prompted anymore.

Anyway, if I attempt to update manually, I get this error:

    Downloading update from https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/release/wordpress-3.8.3-no-content.zip…

    Unpacking the update…

Warning: copy(/myhost/wp-admin/includes/update-core.php) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /myhost/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 217
The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.: wp-admin/includes/update-core.php

    Installation Failed

I checked the file permissions, the directoris wp-admin and wp-includes and all subdirectories where 755. Files 644.

    I read this: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_File_Permissions

I tried to change directories+subdirs to 775 and files to 664 as I thought it’s FTP in my case. Still no chance.

    wp-conternt files+folders are 777

What can I do? I’m stuck… Thank you

[SOLVED] I asked my hosting and they were nice enough to fix all the file permissions… cheers.
