• I manage 4 websites, 3 of which are updated on a daily basis. I updated to 4.7.3 on the 3 busy sites when it first came out.

However, https://www.gwenrhys.com is not updated very often.

I worked on the site yesterday – all went well. Today, I decided to update to 4.7.3.

    What has happened:

    1. The site is visible but the “appearance” is incorrect – a side bar is showing on the left of the “home page”. It should not be there. And a further Widget has placed itself below the sidebar.
    2. The side bar should be on the right hand side of subsequent pages – it is on the left.
    3. IMPORTANTLY: I CANNOT ACCESS THE DASHBOARD. Mostly when I try to login I get a clean white screen. Occasionally I get a HTTP500 error. Occasionally I am asked to add up numbers as an additional security on logging in. But I still can’t log in.

Finally, I get the site up with the WP Admin options across the top, but when I try to click on any of the options (eg Dashboard), I get the blank white screen).

I’ve spent a couple of hours reading and trying the usual fixes I do when something goes wrong (see below) but nothing has worked.

    I have:
    1. Run a “Repair” to the wp-config (database is fine and optimized)
    2. Renamed Plugins folder (didn’t fix)
    3. Renamed the Theme folder for the Theme I’m using (didn’t fix)
    4. Renamed Jetpack folder (didn’t fix)

I’m reluctant to reinstall WP if I can avoid it. I’m reasonably techie and confident but I know my limitations.

I use Updraft to backup to Dropbox and have the uploads, others and db backed up in the last 24 hours.

(Finally why do these things always happen on a holiday!!!!)

If resetting your plugins and theme does not resolve the issue, it’s possible that a .htaccess rule could be the source of the problem. To check for this, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and rename the .htaccess file. If you can’t find a .htaccess file, make sure that you have set your SFTP or FTP client to view invisible files.

If you weren’t able to resolve the issue by either resetting your plugins and theme or renaming your .htaccess file, we may be able to help, but we’ll need a more detailed error message. Internal server errors are usually described in more detail in the server error log. If you have access to your server error log, generate the error again, note the date and time, then immediately check your server error log for any errors that occurred during that specific time period. If you don’t have access to your server error log, ask your hosting provider to look for you.
