Update to 4.4 breaks upgrade feature

So this one has thrown me for a loop.
I updated to 4.4 from 4.3, and now all of a sudden none of my plugins or themes will upgrade when I opt to do so.
The error that is pitched is a failed to make directory. That’s interesting as those directories already exist, and even if they do, those folders are owned by the correct account, group, and the appropriate CHMOD has been set.
If I roll back to 4.3, upgrades work…but as soon as I hit the button to upgrade to 4.4, it all shuts down on me.
Thoughts?
