Before we go to far down the rabbit hole is beyond the scope of a “ordinary” person to correct issues with a theme that prevents it running on php 8. The theme is very unique its a Pinterest clone that was abandoned at php7.4 Ideas solutions help?

    You have 3 options:

    1. Switch to a maintained theme and make the necessary adjustments on a staging site before pushing those to the live site
    2. Getting a developer to take a look and give you a quotation for the work to make it compatible with say php 8.2
    3. Do nothing and hope that no security issues arise

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

    1. There is no current version of the theme
    2. Would this be in the $50 or $5000 price range?
    3. When I activate the theme in 7 its fine when I activate php above that it crashes the site.

I may be able to get the hosting to reset to 7 for me ?? but its not a great solution.

I assume its better to be running latest php or why would they make it!

It’s impossible to say how much it would cost to modify the theme to be compatible with PHP 8.X without reviewing the codebase and the errors that are thrown when you try to activate a newer version of PHP. A competent developer could charge $50-100 USD per hour.

Security updates for PHP 7.4 ended in late 2022 (link).

Ideally, you should use a theme that is well maintained so that you can keep pace with the newer versions of PHP/WordPress.

I would consider rebuilding the site with a different theme that is in active development. This will future-proof its compatibility with plugins and themes moving forward, and ensure that you can following rule 101 for keeping your site(s) safe and secure: update all plugins/themes/WordPress core/PHP on a regular basis.

    Good luck!

No problem at all. Hope you find a solution that isn’t too painful ??
