• Can anyone tell me where to find my WP config file in the administration panel so that I can update any config options referencing the base URL or the document root for my site so that I can point them to my new URL (for the base URL) or to my home/(name)/public_html file (for the document root)? I have looked in the Editor file under Appearances in the administration panel and read the html files, but I did not find any config files there. Thanks for any help.

  • You can’t edit the wp config file using WordPress’s online editor. The file’s default location is in the root folder of the WordPress install, named wp-config.php although it can be moved to other locations.

You either have to edit with FTP or else use your webhosting control panel’s file manager to edit it.

OK. I will try and edit it through the control panel. Thank you for so much for your help.

I went into my webhost’s control panel to try and update any config options referencing the base URL for the WordPress site by double-clicking on the wp-config.php file to open it. However, after opening the file and reading all the information, I did not see where this file referenced the base URL for the WordPress site so that I could change it to my new URL. Can someone provide step-by-step instructions to do this. Am I doing it right by double-clicking on the file above to open and edit it? I would also appreciate instructions on changing the document root for my site to the file name indicated by my webhost. Where is the document root located? This is my first website I have designed using Word Press. My previous site was designed using FrontPage. Thanks again for your help.

You don’t need to change wp-config.php to change the base location.
In the Dashboard menu, select Settings / General. There are two setting there you need to change.

There are implications to moving the location of a WordPress site. The full URL and server path to links and resources is embedded hundreds of times in the WordPress database. When changing a URL path you may also have to update those references in the database. It is easy to get locked out of your site when you change its location, until you learn what you are doing.

Here are some articles on moving WordPress, and on what to do if you get locked out of your admin area. You are wise to learn how to do this correctly before doing it.
