Updating copyright in footer

I want to update my sites footer with the new 2017 copyright.

I checked under appearance -> editor for the Footer.php and didn’t see it. I am not the original developer of this site and I know whoever was last hired made some mistakes, updated the template and now we have the error message “This theme is broken. Template is missing. Standalone themes need to have a index.php template file. Child themes need to have a Template header in the style.css stylesheet.”

Could the footer code be hidden in some other code elsewhere on the site? Or is the footer.php still a separate section of code and just located somewhere else?

We have other issues with the site that are not related to the footer but started after the theme was updated.
