    Hello;

    The most recent update is going around. I have some customized themes that are copied from master themes with the -child suffix to identify them.

    For example, on one site, I have the following theme customized to my liking.

    Twenty Fourteen Child

    Now, I see that there is an upgrade to that theme’s base. What if anything do I need to do to update the new updated theme with my changes.

    Thanks,
    Tamer Z

    First of all, always keep regular backups: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/WordPress_Backups

    Now, updating the parent theme won’t affect the child theme. Generally, you don’t have to worry about updating the child theme. Otherwise, the only way to is to compare the original file to the new file and see if that change should be ported over to your child theme, which is why most of us don’t bother with it. ??

    k, in general has there been many security issues with actual themes or are they mostly in other aspects of the framework?

    Thanks for the response, that is what I have been doing; but I didn’t know if this was bad practice.

    I’m not aware of any recent security issues with specific themes. It could always happen, as with anything online, but as long as you keep your parent theme updated, you generally have nothing to worry about.

    After many updates, it appears that maintaining a child theme has really served me well. Even when updates for the themes have come about; it has not radically changed the sites’ looks or interface.

    Thanks allot. I think maintaining child themes is the best approach and now really value and understand why so many suggest it is the only way to go.
